Scrubbing in for surgery remotely?

The current entertainment trends implementing augmented and virtual reality (VR) was unheard of 20 years ago yet there are now regular measures being taken to bring VR to the masses (as seen by recent moves by Meta). Interestingly, there has been an increase in healthcare startup companies developing and incorporating similar technology in different areas of medicine. A few recent developments involve the area of remote surgery (Telesurgery) and VR surgery/training.

Over a decade ago, robotic surgery where an in-house surgeon would use a robot (Da-Vinci) to perform surgery was not an uncommon practice at the time. Now new advances in VR, robotics, and AI have brought Telesurgery and VR use for surgery into the picture.

One of the the more popular platforms for training in surgery using VR includes Osso VR. This platform utilizes a number of measures to help determine engagement and proficiency in surgical training including interaction in a Virtual Operating Room between team members.

Other platforms and devices are being developed to not just provide surgical training but to allow specialist providers remotely to interact in surgical procedures and provide valuable expertise and input. The company Proprio is one of these firms.

Additionally, development of products involving direct Telesurgery between a patient and remote provider is ongoing and will be an important arena for regulatory clearance going into the future. As you can see, the idea of remote Telesurgery and VR implementation in surgery was unheard of a decade ago and is now becoming a reality. Where this eventually leads us we shall see.

Please note that Meta, Intuitive, Osso VR, and Proprio were not involved in creation of this article, and the products of the above companies listed are property of their respective owners.
