Upper Respiratory Infections (or URTIs) are viral infections of the upper airway, including the nose, throat, and sinuses. They are usually caused by viruses and can be quite common. Symptoms may include a sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and/or coughing. Treatment and prevention are the best ways to reduce symptoms and prevent more serious complications.
If you suspect you have an Upper Respiratory Infection, it’s not always necessary to see a doctor if having mild symptoms. While most URTIs can be treated with home remedies, in some cases, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or other medication to deal with the infection if symptoms persist and are bacterial (such as strep).
Make sure to get plenty of rest. While an URTI can make you feel worn down, getting the rest you need is essential to help you recover. Sleep helps your immune system to fight off any viruses and bacteria, so make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
Keep hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day and avoiding sugary drinks will help to keep your body hydrated and reduce the duration of symptoms.
Gargle with salt water. The salt relieves pain and reduces swelling in the throat. This also helps to flush out any irritants and infection-causing bacteria.
Take over-the-counter medications. You can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help reduce fever and discomfort, and decongestants to help clear the nasal passages. However, if you are pregnant or have other medical conditions, it is best to talk to your doctor first before taking any medications.
Try steam inhalation. Use a humidifier or steam inhalation to help clear your nasal passages. This helps to break down mucus and reduce nasal congestion.
Prop yourself up. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated will help reduce post-nasal drip.
Keep your nose and hands clean. Wash your hands frequently and make sure to blow your nose. This will help reduce the spread of the virus and make sure that your recovery is more comfortable.
Upper Respiratory Infections can be unpleasant and uncomfortable, but following these steps can make the process of managing your symptoms and recovering from the infection easier.
